Joining a Local Commission or Board Can Be Rewarding

About a year ago, I applied for and was appointed to the City of Davis Finance and Budget Commission. This was an effort to get more exposure into City politics and operations, as well as give back to the City that I’ve lived in for the last three years.
As a Commissioner, I’ve spend about three hours a month at our meetings to listen to issues related to the city finance and budget, a particularly hot topic considering the current state of the economy. We received briefings on the revenue and expense projections and provided recommendations on approaches to cover the $3 million budget shortfall.
If you do get a chance, find a local commission, board, or committee to join. It can be very rewarding to participate directly with government or other organizations.

Hi Daniel, good post. I often wish I could join a local board but since I live in the community that employs me, I am not able to do this.
David,
You can find many boards, committees, or commissions to join. In fact, I put serious consideration in running for our local food co-op board of directors.
